The Heart Behind the Music
I’ve always been fascinated by how we learn — what motivates us, and what propels us forward.
As a piano teacher, this curiosity is central to my work. Every student encounters moments when motivation wavers. What helps them push through depends on many things — the teacher, their goals, and their connection to the music.
In my experience, the biggest factor determining whether students stay with piano is simple: they need to love the music they play.
I grew up immersed in classical music, studying with acclaimed pianists and earning degrees from respected conservatories. My background in theory, music history, orchestration, and conducting gives me a deep understanding of how music is built — and how it connects across genres.
Teaching has become a huge part of my life. Staying relevant to my students — finding ways to connect the music they love with the music I hope they’ll come to appreciate — keeps my teaching fresh and rewarding. My students often introduce me to their favorite artists, and through them, I’ve expanded my listening far beyond the classical realm.
100 Solos for Piano Prodigies grew out of that dialogue. Each piece draws inspiration from the styles young pianists love — from pop and jazz to film, folk, and contemporary sounds — while building solid technique and musicality.
As a pianist and composer, I know what audiences love. As a teacher, I know what students love (and what they need to learn). Each piece was originally written for a specific student, then tested, refined, and ultimately approved by students themselves.
I like to think of these pieces as “gummy vitamins” for pianists — deliciously fun, yet packed with artistic and technical nourishment. They challenge and inspire at the same time.
Teachers have written to share how these solos have transformed their studios — motivating students who were on the verge of quitting and helping them exceed their own expectations.
I can’t wait for you and your students to experience them!
